CRIP CAMP, a feature documentary from the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions and Netflix, will have its world premiere on the opening night of the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it is one of 16 films selected for the U.S. Documentary Competition.

CRIP CAMP will also open MoMA’s Doc Fortnight 2020 on February 5th in New York.

American Masters presents the first documentary film exploring the remarkable life and legacy of the prolific and versatile author: Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin, premiering nationwide Friday, August 2, 2019 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), and the PBS Video app.

Higher Ground Productions, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company in partnership with Netflix, has unveiled an initial slate of projects, including CRIP CAMP.

The announcement includes seven projects that are in various different stages of development, to be released over the next several years. The former President and first lady launched Higher Ground last spring.

“We created Higher Ground to harness the power of storytelling. That’s why we couldn’t be more excited about these projects,” Barack Obama said. “Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights, and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain, but will educate, connect, and inspire us all.”

SURVIVORS will have its national broadcast premiere on PBS’ POV on September 24, 2018 (check local listings), following international festival premieres in South Africa and China, and a North American premiere at the Camden International Film Festival.

SURVIVORS is a Co-Production of WEOWNTV and American Documentary | POV, and ITVS. Directed by Arthur Pratt. Co-Directed by Banker White, Anna Fitch and Barmmy Boy. Andrew Gersh was a story consultant and contributing editor on SURVIVORS through a grant from the Sundance Institute.

CRIP CAMP is one of five documentaries in progress selected to attend the 2018 Sundance Documentary Edit & Story Lab at the Sundance Resort in Utah. The Lab creates a space to develop, interrogate and collaborate on independent nonfiction films that are in the later stages of post-production.

Documentary Film Program Director Tabitha Jackson, who oversees the process with Labs Director Kristin Feeley, says “By facilitating these filmmakers coming together to dig deep into context, meaning, structure and narrative — aided by some of documentary’s most innovative and experienced minds — we hope to advance not just these projects, but also make a meaningful investment into some of the most exciting practitioners of nonfiction storytelling for the screen.”

CRIP CAMP is being produced and directed by Nicole Newnham & Jim LeBrecht, and produced by Sara Bolder.

Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin is a feature documentary exploring the remarkable life and legacy of the late author. Produced with Le Guin’s participation over the course of a decade, the film is a journey through the writer’s career and her worlds, both real and fantastic. Viewers will join the writer on an intimate journey of self-discovery as she comes into her own as a major feminist author, opening new doors for the imagination and inspiring generations of women and other marginalized writers along the way. The film features stunning animation and reflections by literary luminaries including Margaret Atwood, Neil Gaiman, David Mitchell, Michael Chabon, and more.

“What distinguishes the film is the way it explores Le Guin’s ideas, and the way she used science-fiction as a vehicle to explore human existence, politics, gender equality, the search for a perfect society and the price of happiness.”
